Pinecone Mouse
The Pinecone Mouse is AJ Jorgensen's single hook mouse for trout and bass, with a low profile that rides with the head barely out of the water. Cross cut rabbit and Krystal Hackle make a soft body over a white rabbit belly, and a spun, trimmed head of Chicone's Fettuccine Foam leaves a bubble line and a plunging sound as it moves. The arms work like pontoons to keep the hook riding true. A single hook casts well and needs less checking for fouls in the dark. Tied here on a size 2/0 hook.

How to Tie the Pinecone Mouse
- 1
Step 1
Clamp the hook in the vise, start the thread and wrap back to the bend.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in the tan suede chenille at the bend for a long tail, with the cross cut rabbit strip alongside it. Trim the excess.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in the white rabbit strip at the bend for the belly, hair pointing back, and leave it trailing behind the fly.
- 4
Step 4
Twist two strands of Loco Legs into a cord and knot it for a rear leg. Repeat for the second leg.
- 5
Step 5
Tie one leg on each side of the shank near the rear of the body so they trail back and down.
- 6
Step 6
Wrap the cross cut rabbit forward in close turns with the Krystal Hackle beside it, stroking the fibers back. Tie both off and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Bring the white rabbit strip forward under the shank for the belly. Tie it off and trim the excess, leaving the front of the shank bare for the head.
- 8
Step 8
Fold two pieces of flesh Fettuccine Foam into loops for the arms and tie one on each side at the front of the body.
- 9
Step 9
Cut the Rootbeer, tan, light gray and flesh Fettuccine Foam into short pieces of equal length and gather them into a bunch with the ends even.
- 10
Step 10
Set the bunch on the shank in front of the body and bind it down with firm wraps so the pieces flare all around the hook. Pack it back against the body.
- 11
Step 11
Repeat with more bunches up the shank, using white Fettuccine Foam on the underside for the belly of the head.
- 12
Step 12
Trim the foam to a rounded, tapered mouse head with sharp scissors, leaving the ends looking like pinecone scales.
- 13
Step 13
Knot two short pieces of flesh foam into small loops for the ears and tie them in at the top of the head.
- 14
Step 14
Tie in the eyes at the front of the head, whip finish and cut the thread.
