Pinky Blinder is Curtis Fry's soft hackle jig nymph, an attractor he uses in his team of Euro nymphs alongside more imitative flies. It pairs flash from a red holographic tinsel abdomen with hot spots: fluorescent pink Coq de Leon fibers in the tail, a light pink bead, and a band of shrimp pink Ice Dub. A peacock Ice Dub thorax and a Brahma soft hackle complete the front of the fly. Tied here on a size 14 hook.

How to Tie the Pinky Blinder

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the pink bead onto the jig hook, seat it behind the eye, and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the red thread behind the bead and wrap a thread base back to the bend. Trim the tag end.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a small bunch of fl. hot pink Coq de Leon fibers at the bend for the tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap the .015 lead wire on the shank behind the bead, then cover it with thread to lock it in place and smooth the underbody.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the gold wire at the bend, then tie in the red holographic tinsel at the same point.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Bring the thread forward, then wrap the tinsel up the shank to form the abdomen. Tie it off short of the bead and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Spiral the gold wire forward over the tinsel in open turns. Tie it off and trim it.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Coat the abdomen with Loon Fluorescing UV Clear Fly Finish and cure it with a UV light.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Dub a thin layer of peacock Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap a small thorax in front of the abdomen.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Stroke the fibers of a Brahma feather back to prepare it, then tie it in at the front of the thorax.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Wrap the feather with hackle pliers, stroking the fibers back as you go. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Dub a small amount of shrimp pink Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap a narrow band in front of the hackle.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Leave a band of red thread behind the bead, whip finish, and trim the thread.
