How to Tie the Pyramid Leech

   Step 1

   Insert the Hareline Balance Pin into the hook eye of the Umpqua Jig 60 XT5000, then slide the black nickel tungsten bead onto the pin. Secure the hook in the vise.

   The balance pin allows the fly to hang horizontally under an indicator — critical for the leech profile.

   Step 2

   Start the Nano Silk 6/0 black thread and secure the balance pin and bead assembly to the hook shank.

   Step 3

   Select a clump of black Bugger Bou marabou and tie it in at the rear of the hook as a flowing tail.

   Bugger Bou is a marabou substitute with excellent movement. Keep the tail about one hook shank length.

   Step 4

   Create a dubbing loop with the thread and load it with Arizona Diamond Dub in Semi Seal Red & Black. Spin it tight.

   Mix the red and black dubbing together for a variegated, buggy look.

   Step 5

   Wrap the dubbing loop forward to the bead, building a tapered body. Brush out the fibers between wraps.

   Use a dubbing brush to pick out fibers for maximum movement and a buggy profile.

   Step 6

   Tie off behind the bead, whip finish, and trim. Pick out any remaining dubbing fibers for a full, lifelike profile.

   Fish this pattern under an indicator suspended 1-2 feet off the bottom with a slow hand-twist retrieve or dead-drifted.
