How to Tie the Quasimodo Pheasant Tail

   Step 1

   Slide the Gold 7/64 tungsten bead onto the Tiemco TMC 2487 BL hook and secure in the vise. Start the Semperfli Classic Waxed 12/0 (Brown) thread behind the bead and wrap a smooth base down to the hook bend.

   The curved hook gives the Quasimodo its characteristic hunched profile.

   Step 2

   Select 4-6 pheasant tail fibers (Dark Brown) and tie them in at the bend as the tail. The tail should be roughly half the shank length. Also tie in a length of UTC Ultra Wire (Gold, Brassie) at the bend for the rib.

   Keep the pheasant tail fibers aligned for a natural-looking tail.

   Step 3

   Wrap the pheasant tail fibers forward to form the abdomen, covering approximately 2/3 of the hook shank. Tie off and trim the excess fibers. Counter-wrap the gold wire rib forward through the pheasant tail body for durability and segmentation. Tie off and helicopter the wire to break it cleanly.

   Counter-wrapping the wire in the opposite direction of the body wraps prevents the pheasant tail from unraveling.

   Step 4

   Tie in 2-3 strands of Hareline Flat Tinsel (Pearlescent) as a wing case over the thorax area. Leave them extending forward for now.

   Step 5

   Tie in 2-3 strands of Hareline Strung Peacock Herl and wrap forward to create a full, buggy thorax just behind the bead. Secure and trim.

   The peacock herl thorax adds iridescence and bulk to the fly.

   Step 6

   Pull the flat tinsel forward over the top of the peacock herl thorax to form the wing case. Tie it down behind the bead, trim the excess. Whip finish behind the bead and apply a drop of head cement.
