The Rabbit Jig Streamer is a small jig streamer from Cheech, built to be dead drifted because it hangs level in the water column. In olive it passes for a small sculpin, and it can be tied in many other colors. The tail is a pinch of rabbit fur, and the collar is rabbit fur clamped off the hide and spun in a thread loop, which gives a dense, even collar with none of the bulk of the leather. Fish it on a Euro rig or as a small streamer. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Rabbit Jig Streamer

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the slotted bead onto the jig hook and clamp the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and wrap back to the bend. Trim the tag end.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Pull a small bunch of rabbit fur from the zonker strip and tie it in at the bend for a tail. Bind the butts along the shank and trim any excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Dub a thin body of dark green Spectra Dubbing from the tail forward, stopping short of the bead to leave room for the collar and head.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Load a stretch of the zonker strip into a multi-clamp so the fur stands out in an even line, then cut the fur off close to the hide.

Cutting the fur away from the hide leaves the leather behind, so the collar stays full and even without bulk.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Form a dubbing loop in the thread in front of the body. Set the clamped fur into the loop, close the loop on it and release the clamp.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Spin the loop tight to lock the fur in place, then brush or pick out any trapped fibers.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Wrap the loop forward as a collar, stroking the fur back with each turn. Tie off the loop and trim the excess.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie in Grizzly Micro Legs at the front of the collar on each side so they sweep back along the fly. Trim the legs to length.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Dub a small head of orange Spectra Dubbing tight behind the bead.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
