Red Neck Midge
Red Neck Midge is a Fulling Mill pattern, tied here by Cheech, that fishes as a midge on rivers and as a chironomid on lakes and reservoirs. Brown tubing over tan thread forms the body, and bands of red and opal tinsel sit behind a black thread collar and a black nickel tungsten bead. It is an easy tie that can be turned out by the dozen, and the colors are open to change. Sizes run from 20 for tailwaters up to 12 for lake chironomids. Tied here on a size 18 hook.

How to Tie the Red Neck Midge
- 1
Step 1
Slide the bead up to the eye of the hook and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the tan thread behind the bead and trim the tag.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in the end of the brown tubing just behind the bead. Wrap the thread back over it in tight, even turns to the bend, then bring the thread forward, stopping short of the bead.
- 4
Step 4
Wrap the tubing forward over the tan thread to the thread position, leaving room behind the bead for the two tinsel bands and a collar. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 5
Step 5
Tie in the red Veevus tinsel just ahead of the tubing. Wrap a narrow band, tie it off and trim the excess.
- 6
Step 6
Secure the tan thread and cut it away.
- 7
Step 7
Start the black thread just ahead of the red band.
- 8
Step 8
Tie in the opal Mirage Tinsel. Wrap a narrow band directly ahead of the red, tie it off and trim the excess.
- 9
Step 9
Cover the tie-off with black thread to form a small collar behind the bead, then whip finish and trim the thread.
- 10
Step 10
Coat the body with Loon UV Flow and cure it with a UV light.
