Rope-a-Dope Stone

Rope-a-Dope Stone

Nymph
Stonefly
Intermediate
Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 12

A jig stonefly from Cheech, built as a simple anchor for a euro rig. Anchor flies are the ones most often lost to snags, so this one drops steps to save time at the vise. A rope of hare's ear rabbit wraps straight onto the shank, so the body needs no dubbing. The wing case is only black color and resin, with no strip of material to tie in. Grizzly Micro Legs supply the tails and legs, and a gold tungsten bead sits up front. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Rope-a-Dope Stone

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the gold slotted tungsten bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the thread behind the bead and wrap a thin base back to the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in Grizzly Micro Legs at the bend so two strands fork out past the hook as tails. Bind down and trim the excess.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in the Midge Stretch Rib at the bend and let it trail behind the fly.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the end of a Rabbit Dreads rope at the bend, then advance the thread up the shank.

The rope goes on as it comes, so the body needs no dubbing.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the rope forward to form the body, leaving room behind the bead for the thorax. Tie it off and trim.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Spiral the stretch rib forward over the body in open turns. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Dub the thread with golden brown Ice Dub and wrap a thorax up to the bead.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Tie a length of Micro Legs across the thorax so legs stick out on both sides of the fly.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Pull the legs into position and trim them to length with scissors.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.

  12. 12

    Step 12

With the hook point up, color the top of the thorax black to form the wing case, using black Solarez Colored UV Resin cured with a UV light, or a black marker.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Apply Solarez Thin Hard resin over the wing case and cure it with the UV light.
