How to Tie the Scott's Lil Foamy

   Step 1

   Secure the Tiemco 2488H hook in the vise and slide on the olive mottled tungsten bead. Start the Nano Silk 18/0 olive thread behind the bead and build a thread base to the bend.

   The 2488H is a wide-gap curved hook perfect for emerger patterns.

   Step 2

   Select a few olive dyed Hungarian Partridge fibers and tie them in as a short tail at the bend of the hook.

   Keep the tail sparse — just a few fibers to suggest trailing legs or a shuck.

   Step 3

   Tie in a length of UTC Ultra Wire Small in copper at the tail tie-in point for the ribbing.

   Step 4

   Cut a narrow strip of Fulling Mill 2mm Bug Foam in white and tie it in at the tail for the wing case. Leave it pointing rearward for now.

   Step 5

   Dub a slim body with the thread, advancing forward toward the bead, leaving room behind the bead for the dubbing collar.

   Keep the body thin and tapered — emergers have slender profiles.

   Step 6

   Counter-wrap the copper wire ribbing forward over the body in evenly spaced turns. Tie off and trim.

   Step 7

   Pull the white foam strip forward over the top of the body to form the wing case. Tie it down behind the bead.

   Leave the foam extending slightly over the bead to create a visible wing pad.

   Step 8

   Apply Hare's Ear Ice Dub in peacock for a dubbing collar behind and around the bead. Pick out the fibers for a buggy look.

   Use a dubbing brush or bodkin to tease out the Ice Dub fibers for maximum movement.

   Step 9

   Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread. Trim excess foam if needed.
