How to Tie the Sculpin Slider

   Step 1

   Secure the hook in the vise and start the olive waxed thread, wrapping a base along the shank.

   Step 2

   Tie in the tungsten streamer eyes on top of the shank using figure-eight wraps and secure with superglue.

   Step 3

   Tie in an olive rabbit zonker strip at the bend, extending as the tail past the hook.

   Step 4

   Dub the body with Gold Ice Dub, wrapping around the eyes to build a baitfish-shaped body.

   Step 5

   Switch to the GSP thread. Cut sections of olive deer hair and begin spinning and stacking them onto the hook shank in front of the body to build the slider head.

   Pack each bunch of deer hair tightly before adding the next for a solid, buoyant head.

   Step 6

   Continue adding deer hair bunches until the head is fully built up to the eye of the hook. Whip finish with GSP thread.

   Step 7

   Remove the fly from the vise and trim the deer hair head into a broad, flat sculpin-shaped profile using a razor blade.

   Leave the bottom flat and the sides wide to create maximum water push and a realistic sculpin silhouette.

   Clean up any stray fibers and apply a drop of head cement to the thread wraps.
