Short Stack Slider

Short Stack Slider

Bass/Warmwater
Panfish
Intermediate
Bluegill
Crappie
Carp
Hook: 8

Curtis Fry of Fly Fish Food built the Short Stack Slider from several warmwater flies, drawing on the Matacrappie, a wire body pattern with a throat, legs and barbell eyes. He wanted a fly that sank more slowly and landed with its rear end up, to be more enticing for carp. The barred wire body, speckled legs and deer belly hair collar make it a fair introduction to stacking and trimming hair. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Short Stack Slider

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the jig hook point down and start the black GSP thread behind the hook eye.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie the Pseudo Eyes onto the shank just behind the hook eye and secure them firmly.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Lay the black and Hot Yellow wire along the shank together and bind them down back to the start of the bend. Return the thread to the eyes.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Wrap both wires forward side by side in touching turns up to the eyes, so the body shows even black and yellow bars. Tie them off and trim the tags.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Tie in the centipede legs at the front of the body so they trail back over the wire. Trim the waste and cut the legs to length.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Turn the hook point up in the vise. The collar goes on this side of the shank, which rides on top when the fly is fished.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Cut, clean and stack a bunch of black deer belly hair. Tie it on at the neck behind the eyes, tips back over the hook and butts forward, with firm wraps so the hair flares.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Stack a bunch of yellow deer belly hair and tie it on over the center of the black in the same way.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Turn the hook point down again so the legs face up.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Form a dubbing loop at the neck, load it with Arizona Diamond Dub and spin it tight. Wrap it behind the eyes on the leg side so the sparkle fibers flare out around the legs as an under collar.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Turn the fly so you can see the head, then use a razor blade to shave away the hair butts standing around the eyes. Leave the rest of the collar sweeping back over the hook.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Whip finish behind the eyes and cut the thread.
