Simi Seal Leech
Simi Seal Leech is a very simple lake pattern built almost entirely from one material, with the tail and the body both made from Arizona Simi Seal. Cheech was shown the fly at a fly shop in Phoenix and later met John Rohmer, who is behind the dubbing. Since then he has nearly stopped fishing plain woolly buggers on lakes, and he has caught fish on every color of Simi Seal. The body is brushed out after tying so the fibers blend into the tail. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Simi Seal Leech
- 1
Step 1
Slide the bead onto the hook, seat it behind the eye, and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the thread behind the bead and wrap it back along the shank to the bend. Trim the tag end.
- 3
Step 3
Cut a small clump of Simi Seal from the bag and pull it between your fingers so the fibers line up.
- 4
Step 4
Tie the clump in at the bend for a tail about as long as the shank. Bind the butts down and trim any excess.
- 5
Step 5
Add a small drop of thin glue to the tail wraps if you want them extra secure.
- 6
Step 6
Run a little dubbing wax along the thread. Pull out a thin, loose strand of Simi Seal and twist it around the thread into a long, sparse noodle.
- 7
Step 7
Wrap the dubbed thread forward from the tail, adding more dubbing as needed, until the body reaches the bead.
- 8
Step 8
Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.
- 9
Step 9
Brush the body out with a dubbing brush so the fibers sweep back and blend into the tail.
