How to Tie the Simple Snowshoe Emerger

   Step 1

   Secure the small emerger hook in the vise. Attach olive thread and wrap to a point halfway between the hook point and barb.

   This fly is typically tied in sizes 18-24—work slowly and use good lighting.

   Step 2

   Strip and align 4 natural pheasant tail fibers. Measure and tie in a short tail at the bend, about the length of the hook gap.

   Step 3

   With the same pheasant tail fibers still attached, carefully wrap them forward as a slim body to the thorax area. Tie off and trim excess.

   Optionally counter-rib with the olive tying thread over the pheasant tail body for durability.

   Step 5

   Prepare a small clump of natural snowshoe rabbit foot hair. Clean out the underfur and align the tips. Measure so tips extend well past the hook bend.

   Step 6

   Tie in the snowshoe hair wing on top of the shank. Form a neat thread head, whip finish, and apply a touch of head cement. Fish dead-drift in or just below the surface film.
