Materials
Fulling Mill 5065 barbless Czech nymph or curved emerger, sizes 14-24
UTC 70 denier, yellow-olive
Ultra Wire, extra-small, silver
CDC puff, light dun
Peacock herl
How to Tie the Smoke Jumper

Step 1
Secure the curved hook in the vise. Start the yellow-olive thread and wrap a smooth base to the bend.

Step 2
Tie in a piece of extra-small silver Ultra Wire at the bend for the rib.

Step 3
Build a slim, tapered thread body from the bend to the thorax area using the yellow-olive thread.
The thread body should be smooth and slightly tapered—this fly relies on a clean, simple profile.

Step 4
Wrap the silver wire forward as a rib in even spirals. Tie off and trim.

Step 5
Select a light dun CDC puff feather. Tie it in at the thorax, extending rearward as a wing/wing case that spreads over the body.

Step 6
Tie in 2-3 strands of peacock herl and wrap a slightly bulky thorax in front of the CDC wing. Whip finish and trim. The fly should sit partly in the film with the CDC wing on the surface.
