Sneaky Pete
The Sneaky Pete is a slider: a popper head mounted backwards so its tapered nose leads, pushing a quiet bulge across the surface instead of a loud pop. It is the bug to reach for when bass or panfish are wary or a popper is spooking them; strip it steadily or twitch it along weed edges and cover. This quick version uses a pre-made foam popper head over a marabou tail, rubber legs and a saddle hackle collar.

How to Tie the Sneaky Pete
- 1
Step 1
Start the thread behind the eye and cover the shank with a base back to the bend; the wraps on the front of the shank give the glue for the head something to grip.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in a chartreuse marabou tail at the bend, roughly one shank length long, and trim the butts.
- 3
Step 3
Tie black rubber legs to the near side of the shank at the tail tie-in point, then bring them under the hook and tie them to the far side so legs flare out on both sides.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in a black saddle hackle and wrap it forward a few turns as a collar in front of the tail and legs, sweeping the fibres back. Tie it off and trim.
- 5
Step 5
Bring the thread forward over the shank wraps to just behind the eye, whip finish and coat the wraps with head cement.
- 6
Step 6
Push a bodkin through the centre of the foam popper head along its length to open a channel for the hook shank.
- 7
Step 7
Put a little glue on the thread-covered shank and twist the foam head on backwards, so the narrow end points toward the hook eye and the flat face sits against the hackle collar. Check it is straight and let the glue set.
Mounting a standard popper head in reverse is what turns it into a slider: the tapered nose slips through the surface quietly instead of popping.
