How to Tie the Soft Hackle - Partridge and Orange

   Step 1

   Secure the hook in the vise. Start orange thread and wrap back to the bend.

   Step 2

   Wrap a smooth body of orange floss or dub a slim body of orange dubbing from the bend to about 2mm behind the eye.

   Step 3

   Select a partridge feather with fibers that reach to or just past the hook point. Prepare it by stripping the fluff from the base.

   For best results, fold the partridge feather before wrapping so all fibers sweep rearward.

   Step 4

   Tie in the partridge feather and make only 1-2 wraps. The hackle should be sparse — less is more.

   Step 5

   Tie off the hackle, build a small head, whip finish, and apply head cement.
