Squatchy B
Squatchy B is Cheech's soft hackle variation on the Pat's Rubber Legs stonefly nymph, named after a coworker's nickname. It is built on a long shank TMC 708 keel hook with a tungsten bead and lead wire. Brown Spanflex supplies the tail and legs, and stonefly chenille makes the body. A brown hen saddle feather gives it the soft hackle, and a little UV Brown Ice Dub adds some flash at the thorax. The colors are easy to change. Tied here on a size 6 hook.

How to Tie the Squatchy B
- 1
Step 1
Slide the black bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Wrap lead wire onto the shank behind the bead for extra weight.
- 3
Step 3
Start the black thread behind the bead and bind the lead wire in place, then take the thread back to the bend.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in lengths of brown Spanflex at the bend for the tail, keeping them long for now.
- 5
Step 5
Tie in the stonefly chenille at the bend and bring the thread forward.
- 6
Step 6
Wrap the chenille forward over the rear of the shank to form the body. Tie it off, trim it, and leave room behind the bead for the thorax.
- 7
Step 7
Pick a brown hen saddle feather and tie it in right behind the bead, standing up and forward over the eye.
- 8
Step 8
Dub a small amount of UV Brown Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap the thorax between the body and the feather.
- 9
Step 9
Wrap the feather as a soft hackle around the thorax area, tie it off and trim the waste.
- 10
Step 10
Tie in more brown Spanflex just behind the bead for the front legs.
- 11
Step 11
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
- 12
Step 12
Trim the tail and legs to the length you want.
