Stonesickle
A stonefly nymph from Tim Sickles, a stonefly specialist, for Skwalas, Goldens or whatever hatch you need to match. Speckled centipede legs form the tails and antennae, hare's mask dubbing gives a buggy body under a black shell back, and amber wire ribs the abdomen. Black rubber legs come out of the thorax. A black ruby tungsten bead makes it heavy enough for a Euro nymph rig, and it also fishes on an indicator rig. The foam in the wing case does not stop it behaving like a nymph. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Stonesickle
- 1
Step 1
Slide the bead onto the hook and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the thread behind the bead and bind in centipede legs so two ends reach forward past the bead as antennae.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in a length of centipede leg at the bend and split it so two ends trail back as tails.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the amber wire at the bend.
- 5
Step 5
Tie in the holographic tinsel and the Scud Back at the bend and leave them trailing behind the hook.
- 6
Step 6
Dub the thread with the hare's mask dubbing and wrap a buggy abdomen forward, stopping where the thorax will begin.
- 7
Step 7
Pull the Scud Back and then the tinsel forward over the top of the abdomen, so the copper sits on top of the black. Tie them off at the thorax and trim.
- 8
Step 8
Spiral the wire forward over the abdomen, tie it off, and trim.
- 9
Step 9
Tie a strip of the Cross-Link foam on top of the hook just ahead of the abdomen for the wing case.
- 10
Step 10
Dub the thorax in stages, tying a section of rubber leg along each side between the stages.
- 11
Step 11
Trim the end of the foam to a V and lay it over the thorax so the two points lift off the front of the abdomen, secure the other end behind the bead, and trim the excess.
- 12
Step 12
Add a little Fly Tyer's Z-Ment to the thread wraps at the thorax.
- 13
Step 13
Dub any bare thread behind the bead, whip finish, and cut the thread.
- 14
Step 14
Trim the rubber legs to length.
