Super Stretch Midge Larva

Super Stretch Midge Larva

Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 16

An easy bloodworm or midge larva tied by Curtis Fry for fish feeding close to the bottom of a lake or river. Hareline's Midge Stretch Rib wrapped over the thread gives a segmented body without adding much bulk, and a coat of UV finish goes over the top. Red, tan and green are all good chironomid and midge larva colors. It can be tied in a range of sizes, with a tungsten bead added when it needs to get down fast. Tied here in blood red on a size 16 hook.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in the Midge Stretch Rib at the back of the body, down in the bend.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Wrap the thread forward over the rib tag in a smooth layer and leave it hanging just behind the eye.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Trim any excess rib tag at the bend so only the wrapping strand is left.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Wrap the rib forward in open, evenly spaced turns, leaving red thread showing between them to segment the body.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Tie off the rib behind the eye and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Whip finish a small head and cut the thread.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Coat the body with Loon Fluorescing UV Clear Fly Finish, turning the fly to reach the top and the underside. Use a bodkin to spread the finish.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Cure the finish under a UV light, checking both sides of the body.
