Tabory's Snake Fly
Lou Tabory's inshore and surf fly for striped bass, with a long white ostrich herl tail, a wrapped marabou body and a big, round spun deer hair head. The bulky head pushes water so the fly shimmies and slithers on the strip, while the soft tail keeps breathing on the pause, suggesting a long, slender baitfish. Fish it near the surface on a floating or intermediate line for the most commotion, or deeper on a sinking tip.

How to Tie the Tabory's Snake Fly
- 1
Step 1
Start the thread at the rear of the shank and cover the back half with a firm thread base.
- 2
Step 2
Even up the tips of a generous bunch of white ostrich herl and tie it in at the bend as a long tail, well past the hook.
The length of the herl is what gives the fly its snaky profile, so do not cut it short.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in a few strands each of silver Krystal Flash and silver Flashabou along the sides of the tail, trimmed to about tail length.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in a white marabou plume by its tip and wrap it forward a few turns, stroking the fibers back, to make a full body over the rear half of the shank. Tie off and trim.
- 5
Step 5
Clean and stack a bunch of white deer hair and tie it in just ahead of the marabou with the tips pointing back, so it flares into a collar over the body.
- 6
Step 6
Spin and pack more bunches of white deer hair forward to the hook eye, pushing each one back tightly against the last.
- 7
Step 7
Whip finish behind the eye, then trim the deer hair into a large, rounded head, leaving the collar tips untouched.
Keep the head blunt and full; it is the head pushing water that makes the fly wobble.
