Twisted Mohair Leech
Cheech's Twisted Mohair Leech began as a demonstration of a furled body, and the mohair he was twisting for the tail seemed too natural not to wrap forward as the body. The twist gives a simple mohair leech more body, and the fly is made to ride inverted through the water. He says it fishes well as a dragonfly nymph, a leech and perhaps a baitfish in the right colors. It ties up easily in a wide range of colors, including claret, brown and burnt orange. Tied here in olive on a size 10 hook.

How to Tie the Twisted Mohair Leech
- 1
Step 1
Slide the drop bead onto the hook up to the eye and clamp the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the thread right behind the bead.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in one end of the leech yarn behind the bead and bind it along the shank to the bend, then bring the thread back toward the bead. Leave the long end of the yarn trailing from the bend.
- 4
Step 4
Twist the yarn firmly until it tightens into a thin cord.
- 5
Step 5
Fold the cord over the tip of your scissors at the length you want for the tail. Bring the free end back to the bend and let the two strands furl around each other.
- 6
Step 6
Pinch the base of the furled tail at the bend, then keep twisting the remaining yarn so it stays tight.
- 7
Step 7
Wrap the twisted yarn forward along the shank to the bead, passing over the base of the tail so it stays locked in place.
- 8
Step 8
Tie off the yarn behind the bead, trim the excess and whip finish.
- 9
Step 9
Brush the body and tail with a dubbing brush to pull out the fibers.
