Two-Toner BC Chironomid
Two-Toner BC Chironomid is a stillwater fly tied by Curtis Fry of Fly Fish Food. Chironomids change through several phases between larva and adult, and small color shifts can match many of them, which makes this style versatile. The body carries two tones under a transparent gray synthetic quill, with red thread at the rear and opal tinsel toward the front, sealed with a clear UV finish. An orange Ice Dub thorax sits behind a nickel tungsten bead, and white floss forms the breathers. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Two-Toner BC Chironomid
- 1
Step 1
Slide the nickel bead onto the hook, set the hook in the vise and keep the bead back from the eye.
- 2
Step 2
Start the red thread behind the eye and tie in a piece of white Glo-Brite floss for the breathers.
- 3
Step 3
Whip finish and cut the thread, then slide the bead forward over the wraps so the floss stands out in front of it. Trim the floss to a short tuft.
- 4
Step 4
Restart the red thread behind the bead and lay a smooth, even base back into the bend and forward again.
- 5
Step 5
Tie in the Hemingway quill at the rear of the body, let it trail behind the hook and bring the thread forward to the thorax area.
- 6
Step 6
Tie in the opal Mirage tinsel and wrap it over the front part of the body, leaving the rear of the body red. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Wrap the quill forward in even turns so the red and the opal show through as two tones. Tie it off and trim the excess.
- 8
Step 8
Coat the body with Loon Fluorescing UV Clear Fly Finish and cure it with a UV light.
- 9
Step 9
Dub a small amount of orange Ice Dub onto the thread and wrap a small thorax, leaving a band of red thread between the dubbing and the bead.
- 10
Step 10
Whip finish behind the bead and trim the thread.
