Ween Dawg Chironomid
Cheech ties this plain stillwater chironomid as a pattern only a step beyond a zebra midge. A smooth claret Flex-Floss body and a neon silver wire rib sit behind a fluorescent white tungsten bead, and a short tuft of fluorescent orange thread under the shank adds a simple hot spot for the gills. The idea is to keep the fly from getting overdressed, so choose the color and size you need and tie a batch. Tied here on a size 12 hook.

How to Tie the Ween Dawg Chironomid
- 1
Step 1
Slide the bead up to the eye and mount the hook in the vise.
- 2
Step 2
Start the claret thread right behind the bead and trim the tag.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in the Flex-Floss behind the bead and bind it along the shank as you wrap the thread back down into the bend, leaving the floss trailing off the back.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the wire at the back of the body with the floss and let it trail behind the hook as well.
- 5
Step 5
Wrap the thread forward in a smooth layer and leave it hanging right behind the bead.
- 6
Step 6
Wrap the Flex-Floss forward in smooth, even turns to the bead. Tie it off with the thread and trim the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Spiral the wire forward over the floss in open, evenly spaced turns to make the rib. Tie it off behind the bead and remove the excess.
- 8
Step 8
Cut a small bunch of short strands of the fluorescent orange thread and tie them in under the shank right behind the bead, so they hang below the fly.
- 9
Step 9
Trim the orange strands to a short tuft under the shank for the gills.
- 10
Step 10
Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
