Wiggle Whitey

Wiggle Whitey

Streamer
Articulated
Advanced
Brown Trout
Hook: 1-1/0

An articulated whitefish streamer designed by Cheech of Fly Fish Food. He built it after a day of landing whitefish, reasoning that big brown trout must eat plenty of these slim, dirty gray and white fish. Bands of blue fox tail fur and UV Polar Chenille give the body a soft, breathing outline, and a tungsten bead adds belly weight. A dubbed head, large pearl eyes and marker shading finish the look. Fish it as a large streamer for big brown trout. Tied here on size 1 and 1/0 hooks.

How to Tie the Wiggle Whitey

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount the size 1 rear hook, start the white thread and lay a base back to the bend.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Tie in the grizzly variant schlappen at the bend so it trails well past the hook. Bind the butts down and trim any excess.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a length of UV Polar Chenille just ahead of the tail. Take a few turns forward, stroking the fibers back as you go, then tie it off and trim.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Cut a small bunch of blue fox tail fur and tie it on top of the shank with the tips pointing forward over the hook eye. Trim the butts, fold the fur back over the tail and bind it down.

Fox bulks up quickly, so keep each bunch sparse until you learn how much you like.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Turn the fly over and tie a second small bunch on the underside the same way, so the fur surrounds the hook.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Add a few strands of Holographic Flashabou so they trail through the fur.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Clip the fur back out of the way with a hair clip. Repeat the chenille and fox bands up to the eye, then whip finish, cut the thread and coat the wraps with glue.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Mount the 1/0 front hook and start the thread. Run the wire through the eye of the rear hook and bind both legs along the front shank, leaving enough of a gap for the rear section to swing.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Clip the rear section back. Build the front body the same way, working forward in bands of UV Polar Chenille, fox and a little flash.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Add the gold tungsten bead near the front of the hook for belly weight, and cover the wraps with the next band of fox.

  11. 11

    Step 11

Continue with one more band of fox and flash, leaving room behind the eye for the head.

  12. 12

    Step 12

Tie small bunches of Alpha Wolf Bruiser Blend on top of the shank pointing forward over the hook eye and fold them back for the back of the fly. Turn the fly over and do the same with cream for the belly, then whip finish and cut the thread.

  13. 13

    Step 13

Trim stray fibers around the head and shade it with the Goldenrod and Delta Brown markers, keeping the darkest color along the back.

  14. 14

    Step 14

Glue a pearl eye to each side of the head and let it set before fishing.
