Wood Duck Trout Spey
Wood Duck Trout Spey is a single-hook swing fly from AJ Jorgensen for trout water. It keeps a small profile and uses warm wood duck colors, with a tippet tail, an opal tinsel body ribbed with silver wire, a slim mallard wing and a soft hen and guinea collar. He has fished it on the swing for over five years on the Henry's Fork and the South Fork. Tied here on a size 8 hook.

How to Tie the Wood Duck Trout Spey
- 1
Step 1
Set the hook in the vise, start the thread and wrap a base along the shank to the rear.
- 2
Step 2
Tie in a small bunch of golden pheasant tippets at the rear for the tail and bind the butts along the shank.
- 3
Step 3
Tie in the silver wire at the base of the tail.
- 4
Step 4
Tie in the Mirage tinsel at the same point and bring the thread forward to the front of the body.
- 5
Step 5
Wrap the tinsel forward in touching turns, tie it off and trim it, leaving room at the front for the wing and both collars.
- 6
Step 6
Counter-wrap the wire forward over the tinsel in open spirals, tie it off and remove the excess.
- 7
Step 7
Prepare a mallard flank feather and tie it in on top at the front of the body by the stem, with the tip pointing back. Pull the stem forward until the wing is a slim strip over the body at the length you want, then bind it and trim the stem.
- 8
Step 8
Prepare a ginger hen feather and tie it in ahead of the wing.
- 9
Step 9
Wrap the hen feather forward, sweeping the fibers back, then tie it off and trim it for a sparse shadow collar.
- 10
Step 10
Tie in a guinea feather by its tip ahead of the hen and wrap it the same way for the main collar, then tie it off and trim it.
- 11
Step 11
Build a small thread head, whip finish and cut the thread.
- 12
Step 12
Coat the head with UV resin and cure it.
