Wooly Baetis

Wooly Baetis

Nymph
Mayfly
Intermediate
Rainbow Trout
Brown Trout
Hook: 20

Cheech of Fly Fish Food ties this Blue Winged Olive nymph as a variation on the RS2, adding a dubbed thorax under a wing case of black flashback tinsel. A Wee Wool body stays slim but still looks buggy, and it gives you something a little different to show fish during a local Baetis hatch. A tan glass bead sits at the head, and the colors are easy to change to match the bugs on your own water. Tied here on a size 20 hook.

How to Tie the Wooly Baetis

  1. 1

    Step 1

Slide the glass bead onto the hook and up to the eye, then mount the hook in the vise.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Start the olive thread behind the bead.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Tie in a length of Wee Wool and bind it down along the shank to the bend, leaving the yarn hanging at the rear.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Tie in two Mayfly Tails fibers at the bend so they spread apart behind the hook. Trim the excess.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Bring the thread forward to the end of the body, leaving room for the thorax behind the bead.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Wrap the Wee Wool forward to the thread to make a slim, buggy body. Tie it off and trim the excess.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Tie in a strip of black flashback tinsel on top of the shank at the front of the body, with the long end pointing back over the body.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Dub the thread lightly with Prism Bug Dub and wrap a thorax up to the bead.

  9. 9

    Step 9

Pull the tinsel forward over the thorax and tie it down behind the bead. Trim the excess.

  10. 10

    Step 10

Whip finish behind the bead and cut the thread.
