Yellow Sally / Little Yellow Stone
A classic dry fly imitating the small, bright yellow Isoperla stoneflies (Yellow Sallies) that hatch prolifically from late spring through summer. Simple construction with a yellow dubbed body, bleached elk hair wing, and ginger hackle. Excellent top fly for dry-dropper rigs.

Materials
2XL dry fly hook (Daiichi 1270 or TMC 5212), size 12-18
Yellow 8/0 or 70 denier
Red 4-strand floss (Danville), small ball at bend to imitate egg sac
Bright yellow Antron or Superfine dubbing
Fine gold wire
Bleached elk hair or deer hair, tied downwing
Ginger or grizzly dyed yellow dry fly hackle, palmered through thorax
Slightly brighter yellow or pale orange dubbing
How to Tie the Yellow Sally / Little Yellow Stone

Step 1
Secure the hook in the vise and start yellow thread, wrapping a base back to the bend.

Optionally, tie in a small ball of red floss at the bend to represent the egg sac of female stoneflies.
Keep the egg sac small—just a few wraps of floss built into a tiny ball.

Step 3
Dub a slender, tapered body with bright yellow Antron dubbing forward to the 65% point on the shank.

If using gold wire rib, tie it in at the bend and counter-wrap forward over the dubbed body. Tie off.

Stack a sparse bunch of bleached elk or deer hair and tie it in on top of the shank with tips extending just past the body.

Select a ginger dry fly hackle. Tie it in by the stem at the wing base.

Optionally dub a small thorax with slightly brighter dubbing in front of and behind the wing.

Palmer the hackle forward through the thorax in 4-5 turns. Tie off and trim.

Form a small, neat thread head. Whip finish and apply head cement.
