How to Tie the Zonker

  1. 1

    Step 1

Mount hook in vise and wrap lead wire along the shank for weight. Secure with thread wraps and apply a drop of superglue.

Keep lead wraps centered on the shank to maintain balance.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Lay a thread base from behind the eye to the bend. Tie in the pearl Mylar tubing at the rear of the hook.

Pull the core out of the Mylar tubing before sliding it over the shank.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Advance the thread to behind the eye. Slide the Mylar tubing forward over the shank, tie off, and trim excess.

Keep the body smooth and tight against the hook shank.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Cut a rabbit Zonker strip slightly longer than the hook shank. Pierce the strip at the bend with the hook point so the fur faces up and back.

Wet the rabbit strip before piercing to make it easier to handle.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Pull the Zonker strip forward and tie it down securely behind the eye. Trim excess hide.

Ensure the strip is centered on top of the shank.

  6. 6

    Step 6

Optionally tie in a few strands of Flashabou along each side and add a sparse red hackle collar.

Keep flash sparse for a natural look.

  7. 7

    Step 7

Attach stick-on eyes to each side of the head. Build a thread head, whip finish, and coat with UV resin or head cement.

Apply UV resin in thin layers for a clear, durable finish.
